Jeannette’s mom tries to teach her daughter to be a positive person. She tells Jeannette that everyone may have good qualities that he or she can be loved for those. She tries to teach Jeannette to see the glass half full and not half empty. Jeannette is upset about her grandmother because she is racist and has prejudice toward black people. Her mother persuades Jeannette to find and see her grandmother’s positive traits. She mentions that all human even criminal people such as Hitler have some good qualities, for example “Hitler loved dogs.” Jeannette learns to find the good in any person instead of judge.
“Life is a drama full of tragedy and comedy; you should learn to enjoy the comic episodes a little more.” (129)
Jeannette’s mom tells this sentence when Jeannette is embarrassed because people are looking at them and laughing while they are sleeping in their car whit garbage bags are taped over it. Her mother tries to teach her if she faces with a tragic situation in her life and she cannot change it she should better pass it and go with flow. Life is full of challenge and everyone may experience some ups and downs. People are not in control of the situations that surround and affect them, and they spend much of their times fighting for or against things that play a part in their lives, while it is better to enjoy of happy moments in their lives and let sad moments to pass.
